SYSA Referee In Training Program
Fall 2008
Program Description:
SYSA will be trialing a new Referee in Training program this Fall, designed for entry level referees to gain experience in refereeing soccer matches at the U6/U7 level. Many referees take the 18 hours of formal USSF sponsored Grade 8 or Grade 9 referee training only to discover that refereeing is not for them or they do not have the time to referee as they had hoped. This program will provide a “taste” of what refereeing is all about before the referee is required to obtain formal training to work the upper level games.
SYSA utilizes a very basic set of rules and a very basic field layout for the younger U6/U7 games. Since SYSA restricts youth referees ages 12 and 13 to focus on U6/U7 level games, the full set of Laws learned in formal training is under-utilized until the U8 game level anyway.
So the program is designed to offer a glimpse of what refereeing is all about prior to the commitment of formal training, and if the referee chooses, he/she may then pursue the formal USSF training to obtain an official referee badge enabling the referee to then work U8 and above level games.
Referees participating in the Referee In Training program are compensated for the games they work according to the standard SYSA payment schedule for U6 and U7 games.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a current soccer player (travel or house) registered with SYSA for current season
- Players age 12-14 are eligble, provided they are age 12 by the first game of the current season
Participation Requirements:
- Attend an SYSA sponsored classroom training night to learn the laws of the game for U6/U7, and to get trained on game signup procedures and payment requirements
- Attend an SYSA sponsored field training program where the ref can practice his/her skills during a U6/U7 scrimmage
- Obtain an official referee uniform – see Referee section of SYSA website for requirements for this
The Fall 2008 season Class Training is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26 and Wednesday, August 27, from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Only one night of attendance is required..
